Project description

Our organisation “Offene Jugend- und Kulturarbeit Bregenz” (OJKA Bregenz) – Open youth and cultural work Bregenz – provides a professional field of applied youth work and is indispensable for local youth policy in our region.

Our work functions as a mouthpiece for the needs of young people and a place for socializing for young people. That is why we create social and cultural spaces in which young people can develop their identity, personality and relationships.

The association “Open Youth and Cultural Work Bregenz” organises and operates demand-oriented youth work in the entire social landscape of the town of Bregenz. The offers are aimed at all young people between the ages of 11 and 25, regardless of their biological or social gender, class, ideology, religious affiliation, nationality, language or state of health!

The participation of the young people forms the basis for all offers, so that the self-created free spaces become places of self-awareness and self-efficacy. The volunteers have the opportunity to get involved as part of our youth centre and mobile services, as well as in our projects, which are developed and carried out participatively with our clients, as well as to work in our cultural sector (from folklore and diversity parties to punk concerts).

Anyone interested can participate! We are barrier-free in access as well as in mind and heart.

Tasks of the volunteer

The volunteer will work five days a week, 34 hours a week including German course. S*he will have two days holiday per month.

The volunteers have the opportunity to participate in our youth centres and mobile services (street work), as well as in our different projects, which are developed and carried out in a participatory manner with the youngsters. These are projects on the topics of democracy policies, anti-racism, gender sensitive youth work, health and wellbeing, food + cooking, urban gardening, sports (for example “fair boxing”), outdoor sports and activities, street work, art projects etc.

Furthermore, the volunteers can support us in our culture work: from folklore and diversity parties to punk and rock concerts, interactive music projects, art, street art, graffiti etc.

In our organisation, the volunteer will be seen as a temporary team member who supports us in our work.

Examples of tasks are:

  • Working in the youth café: working behind the bar, playing games with the youngsters, communicating with them, giving peer-advice
  • Mobile Jugendarbeit/street work: meeting young people in the streets or at local sites, talking to them and informing them about our workshops and activities
  • Assisting and co-organising different activities, workshops and projects as mentioned above

Doing a voluntary project with our organisation, the volunteer will learn a lot about youth work and will get a practical insight into the various fields of youth work and social work.

Volunteer profile

Our volunteers should like to work with young people and should be interested in different youth cultures, music, sports, nightlife and youth centre work. They should be interested in caring for young people and be prepared to take the initiative to get in contact with them. They should be flexible and be willing to take part in different kinds of projects.

Since our opening hours are mainly in the afternoons, evenings and at weekends they should be prepared to work late hours and work at weekends as well.

Practical arrangements

The volunteer will live in a student accommodation, where also other volunteers, students and residents of different backgrounds live. The accommodation is organised by the hosting organisation. The volunteer will have a room with an own bathroom ensuite and share a kitchen and common rooms with the other residents.

The infrastructure with trains and buses is very accessible and frequent. Additionally, s*he will also have a bicycle at her*his disposal. The volunteer will receive a ticket for free use of any public transport in the whole region of Vorarlberg during the complete duration of the ESC project.

Support during the voluntary project

S*He will have regular meetings with her*his tutor in our organisation to talk about the development of the project, task assignments, general wellbeing, problems, wishes etc.

The Project Coordinator will hold a monthly evaluation meeting with all volunteers in Vorarlberg. At the end of the project, we will evaluate the project together with the volunteer: to see what s*he has learned and which competences s*he has gained and as a result fill out the Youthpass. Furthermore, there will be a final personal evaluation meeting with the Project Coordinator.
